Alumni who studied at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in the year 2000 have once again demonstrated their deep emotional bond with their alma mater. Graduates settled across India and in various countries abroad came together with a shared intention to contribute meaningfully to the growth and future of the institution that shaped their lives.
As part of this collective effort, the alumni raised donations that amounted to nearly ₹100 crore. The announcement was formally made during a Silver Jubilee alumni reunion held on the IIT Kanpur campus. On the occasion, the former students expressed heartfelt gratitude to the institution and their teachers, stating that they would remain indebted for the guidance and foundation provided to them.
Notably, this marks the first time in the country that alumni from a single graduating batch have come together to raise such a substantial donation for their educational institution.
Speaking at the event, IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal said that the alumni had requested the funds be used to establish the Millennium School of Technology and Society. He added that it is a matter of great pride to see IIT Kanpur alumni holding prestigious positions across the globe.
The alumni, in their statement, said the collective donation symbolizes a student’s lifelong connection with their alma mater. They emphasized that their association with IIT Kanpur is enduring and unforgettable.
Founded in 1959, IIT Kanpur has been accorded the status of an institution of national importance by the Government of India. Securing admission into the institute is widely regarded as a rare privilege, reflecting the pivotal role IIT Kanpur plays in shaping the careers and lives of its students.
