The Supreme Court has expressed serious concern over the increasing number of dowry-related deaths and harassment cases across the country. During the hearing of a dowry death case from Chhattisgarh, Justice B V Nagarathna questioned why brides and their families continue to face humiliation even after marriage. The court observed that many women are subjected to mental and physical harassment despite their families fulfilling social and financial expectations.
The apex court also voiced concern over the rise in dowry-related crimes among educated and financially stable families. Justice Nagarathna remarked that attempts to demean brides and their families are unacceptable and reflect a disturbing social attitude. The court emphasized the need for society to eliminate the dowry system and ensure dignity and respect for women.
