Indian actress Navya Nair recently faced a fine of AUD 1,980 at Melbourne Airport after arriving with a small 15-centimetre string of fresh jasmine flowers. The flowers, gifted by her father for an Onam celebration, appeared to be a simple and emotional token but resulted in a costly penalty due to strict biosecurity regulations in Australia.
Under Australia Biosecurity Laws, bringing fresh plant materials into the country is prohibited to prevent the spread of pests and diseases. Navya responded to the situation with grace and humour, referring to them as her “most expensive flowers” while also spreading awareness among travellers. The incident serves as a reminder that passengers must declare uncertain items or avoid carrying them altogether to prevent unexpected fines.
