These Films Caused Heavy Losses for Distributors This Year

Several big-ticket films released this year with considerable expectations have reportedly disappointed at the box office, resulting in heavy losses for distributors and theatrical buyers. These movies entered theatres after doing substantial pre-release business, but their final theatrical collections were reportedly far below the levels required for buyers to recover their investments. Among the recent releases, Karthi’s Sardar 2 emerged as one of the biggest disappointments, with its worldwide theatrical rights reportedly sold for around Rs. 35 crore while the film collected approximately Rs. 9.25 crore worldwide. In the Telugu states, the theatrical rights were reportedly acquired for Rs. 8 crore, against collections of around Rs. 2.50 crore.

Another major example is the Kannada film Toxic, which reportedly entered the market with a theatrical target of around Rs. 450 crore but ended its worldwide theatrical run at approximately Rs. 160 crore. Pawan Kalyan’s Ustaad Bhagat Singh also struggled to recover its reported theatrical rights value of Rs. 130 crore, with collections of around Rs. 60 crore. Prabhas’ The Raja Saab reportedly recorded theatrical business of approximately Rs. 122 crore and finished its run at around Rs. 87 crore. These figures highlight the significant gap between pre-release valuations and theatrical performance for several high-profile films this year.
