The latest developments in the Tamil film industry indicate a significant shift that could influence the future of South Indian cinema. At a recent general body meeting of the Tamil Film Producers Council, producers took several key decisions addressing OTT releases and financial structures. The council strongly opposed the pressure from distributors and theatre owners to enforce an eight-week gap before films can be released on OTT platforms, stating that such conditions place a heavy financial burden on producers.
To arrive at a unified resolution, representatives from producer councils across the four South Indian states are scheduled to meet on May 10. There is also a possibility of announcing a temporary halt in film releases until the issue is resolved. Additionally, for big and medium-budget films, the council has proposed a revenue-sharing model instead of fixed remuneration for actors and key technicians, aiming to reduce production costs. Plans are also underway to launch an official YouTube channel for film promotions, reflecting a broader push toward transparency and safeguarding producers’ interests.
