Producer SKN Breaks Silence on ‘Chunni Controversy’ in Rashmika’s The Girlfriend
National Crush Rashmika Mandanna’s latest film The Girlfriend, directed by Rahul Ravindran, has been receiving positive response from audiences. The youth-centric storyline has sparked wide discussions online.
Recently, director Rahul Ravindran visited a theatre as part of the film’s promotions. After the screening, a young woman shared her emotional reaction, saying she loved the film’s message about women’s courage. She then removed her chunni (dupatta) symbolically, saying it represented her confidence — a gesture that Rahul appreciated and responded with a hug.
However, the video soon went viral, triggering mixed reactions from netizens. Some criticized it, saying, “Women empowerment isn’t about removing a chunni,” while others defended it as “a symbolic act of courage.”
As the controversy grew, producer SKN responded during the film’s success meet. He clarified,
“Our intention was only to tell women to overcome their fears, not to remove their chunni. The scene’s purpose was to show women breaking free from fear — nothing more.”
He further urged everyone not to misinterpret the message, bringing temporary clarity to the chunni controversy surrounding The Girlfriend.
