The ongoing theatre rental system controversy in Tollywood, which has sparked intense debate in recent days, appears to have temporarily settled. At a time when growing differences between producers, distributors, and exhibitors were raising concerns about the industry’s future, megastar Chiranjeevi stepped in, becoming a key talking point in film circles. With fears that major film releases could be impacted, representatives from all sectors were brought together for discussions. Industry sources suggest that a consensus has been reached to continue the existing fixed rental model until June 30.
Theatre owners in Telangana have argued that the current rental system is leading to losses due to declining audience footfall, rising electricity charges, and increasing maintenance costs. They are demanding a shift to a revenue-sharing (percentage-based) model. However, producers have expressed concerns that a sudden change could disrupt already planned releases, especially big-budget films. To prevent the issue from escalating, Chiranjeevi reportedly hosted a crucial meeting at his residence, urging all stakeholders to avoid hasty decisions and find a balanced solution. Meanwhile, a chamber committee is expected to conduct a detailed study on implementing the percentage system, offering temporary relief to the ongoing tensions in the industry.
