The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced major rule changes for the 99th Oscars scheduled for 2027. Key updates include changes in acting categories, international films, and technical sections. Actors can now be nominated for multiple films in the same category, while countries can submit more than one entry in the international film section. Winning films will also credit the director’s name on the trophy.
The Academy has also taken a strict stance on the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. Only human-written scripts will be considered for screenplay categories, while AI-assisted writing will not be allowed. Similarly, performances modified or generated using AI will be disqualified from acting categories. The 99th Oscars ceremony will be held on March 14, 2027, in Los Angeles.
