Kantara Chapter 1 is storming the box office like a tsunami — racing ahead across every region, irrespective of the state. It has already crossed the ₹300 crore gross mark over the weekend, and an official poster from the production house could drop any moment now.
However, in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Idli Kottu couldn’t withstand the Kantara wave. Many theaters had to pull out Idli Kottu shows and allocate them to Kantara, which clearly shows the magnitude of the situation. Surprisingly, even in Tamil Nadu — a state where dubbed films rarely get huge response — Kantara’s collections have been phenomenal, shocking trade analysts.
While Idli Kottu struggled in Telugu, its original Tamil version stood strong. Tamil audiences absolutely loved the “Idli Sambar”! According to reports, over 7 lakh tickets were sold on BookMyShow during the weekend, earning more than ₹30 crores in gross revenue — a solid figure for Dhanush. Achieving such numbers purely from the Tamil market proves that the film’s content connected well with audiences.
Generally, Tamil viewers appreciate stories that highlight native emotions and strong family sentiment. When that balance clicks, both mass and family audiences lend strong support — and that’s exactly why Idli Kottu has now entered the “Hit” category.
Dhanush is said to be happy with the outcome. Though it might not have reached the range of Raayan, which he directed last year, collecting ₹30 crores for such an emotional drama is no small feat. What’s more, seeing a film that flopped in another language perform strongly in its home territory is definitely satisfying. Fans are also delighted that Idli Kottu managed to hold its ground despite Kantara’s dominance.
Based on the Monday hold and weekday drops, the final verdict on its box office run will become clearer. Meanwhile, sources in Chennai reveal that Dhanush is positively considering Idli Kottu 2 after fans expressed their wish for a sequel.
