Many people do not consider constipation to be a serious health issue. However, medical experts warn that ignoring constipation in its early stages can lead to serious long-term complications, including conditions such as piles (hemorrhoids). Constipation is not limited to the elderly, children or pregnant women it can affect people of all age groups. Unhealthy dietary habits are a major contributing factor. If the condition is not identified and corrected at an early stage, it can worsen over time.
Infrequent bowel movements or spending excessive time during defecation are key symptoms of constipation. Having three or fewer bowel movements per week is considered a sign of constipation. In some cases, even if bowel movements occur daily, difficulty in passing stools or hard, dry stools also indicate constipation. According to experts, relying on coffee or hot water to initiate bowel movements, experiencing pain or discomfort during defecation or feeling unable to pass stools without these triggers are clear signs of constipation. Additionally, the condition may occur when waste remains in the intestines even after daily bowel movements or due to indigestion.
Normally, one should feel light and relaxed after bowel evacuation. However, individuals suffering from constipation often experience a heavy or uncomfortable feeling in the abdomen even after defecation, with no sense of complete evacuation. Medical professionals caution that such symptoms can increase the risk of developing piles in the future. Heartburn may commonly occur after consuming oily or heavy foods or overeating. However, if heartburn occurs frequently especially if it persists even after bowel movements it may indicate a more serious underlying health condition, experts warn.
