In our daily diet, we use a variety of vegetables, but many people are often unsure about their English names. One such commonly used vegetable is known as Arbi in Hindi and Chamakura or Chema Dumpa in Telugu. Many even assume that the name “Arbi” is related to Arab countries, but that is not true. Scientifically, this vegetable is called Colocasia esculenta, while in common usage it is widely known as Taro Root or Colocasia Root. Grown underground, this root vegetable is popular across the world, and not just its tuber but also its large leaves are used in various traditional dishes.
Taro root is not only delicious but also packed with essential nutrients. It contains high fiber and resistant starch, which help improve digestion and prevent constipation. Rich in potassium, it supports heart health and helps regulate blood pressure. With low calories and high fiber, it aids in weight management by keeping you full for longer periods. Additionally, the presence of Vitamin C and Vitamin E boosts immunity. Though some people avoid it due to its sticky texture while cooking, when prepared properly—either boiled or fried—it offers both great taste and numerous health benefits.
