Among India’s greatest musical maestros, M.S. Subbulakshmi holds an unparalleled position. Not just in South India, but anywhere her rendition of the Venkateswara Suprabhatam is heard, it is pure nectar flowing from her voice. Creating a biopic on sucha a legendary figure is both essential and exciting. Geetha Arts is reportedly working on this project, with Sai Pallavi being considered for the lead role. Directed by Gautam Thinnanuri, the emotional and musical biopic has yet to reveal who will handle its music, keeping audiences in suspense.
Subbulakshmi’s musical journey, from her birth in Madurai in 1916, performing at the age of 12, entering the Tamil film industry in 1938, and gaining widespread acclaim with the 1945 film Meera, is filled with remarkable milestones. With the encouragement of her husband Sadasivam, performances across India and abroad, and prestigious honors like Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, alongside untold personal struggles and tears, her story is perfect for cinematic portrayal. Starting from 1916, with kingdom-level dramatic moments, the biopic requires a substantial budget. If executed well, Subbulakshmi’s connection with audiences could make it a box-office marvel, much like Mahanati.
