The discussion around Work From Home (WFH) has resurfaced after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for fuel-saving measures, including giving priority to online meetings and remote working. The remarks have triggered speculation about the possible return of large-scale work-from-home practices that were widely implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In this backdrop, the IT employees’ union NITES has written to the Centre seeking official orders to implement mandatory work-from-home arrangements for a certain period in the national interest. The union stated that daily commuting by IT employees leads to massive fuel consumption and traffic congestion. It also highlighted environmental protection and employee welfare concerns. Meanwhile, industry body NASSCOM clarified that most IT companies are already following hybrid work models based on employee roles and client requirements. The organisation added that companies are also reducing unnecessary electricity usage and adopting additional energy-saving measures in line with the Prime Minister’s appeal.
