Warning Over Dangers in Black Sea Routes

The Ministry of External Affairs has issued a Black Sea advisory for Indian seafarers working on international commercial vessels. It has urged them to exercise extreme caution before accepting jobs on ships operating in or transiting through the Black Sea region, citing the deteriorating security situation. The advisory comes in the wake of a recent attack on a commercial vessel carrying Indian crew members near the Odessa coast of Ukraine. Reports indicate that two Indian nationals are missing, while two others are safe. The ministry highlighted that missile and drone attacks on commercial vessels have become frequent in this region.

The MEA further stated that at least five Indian nationals have lost their lives since April 2026 due to such attacks in Black Sea routes. Seafarers have been advised to carefully assess risks before taking up assignments, verify safety measures, insurance coverage, emergency protocols, and employment conditions. They are also urged to stay in constant touch with their families and follow maritime safety guidelines issued by authorities. In case of emergencies, Indian nationals are advised to contact the nearest Indian embassy through designated helplines while operating in international waters.
