The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Friday unanimously passed a resolution opposing the proposed Mekedatu Dam project on the Cauvery River by the Karnataka government. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay introduced the resolution in the Assembly, urging the Central Government not to grant any approvals for the project. He emphasized that Tamil Nadu would continue to protect the water rights and interests of its farmers.
The issue has also sparked a political debate within the Congress party. While Tamil Nadu Congress leaders supported Vijay’s resolution, the Congress government in Karnataka continues to back the Mekedatu project. The contrasting positions taken by Congress leaders in the two states have placed the party leadership in a difficult situation, and political observers are keenly watching how the Congress high command responds to the growing controversy.
