Amid its military actions against Iran, the United States has announced a fresh economic offensive. President Donald Trump warned that countries and entities providing economic support to Iran could face severe consequences. He called for an end to activities such as oil smuggling, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and the use of front companies to support Tehran. Trump said the US aims to isolate Iran economically and urged its allies to join the effort.
The move could have some impact on India, which remains an important trading partner of Iran. In 2025-26, India exported goods worth around $1.25 billion to Iran, while imports from Iran stood at about $370 million. India exports products including basmati rice, tea, sugar, fruits, pharmaceuticals and spices, while importing pistachios, dates, apples and kiwis from Iran. However, bilateral trade has declined considerably in recent years, which could limit the overall impact of any new US economic measures on India.
