The United States has crossed a historic debt milestone, with its national debt surpassing $40 trillion for the first time. According to figures from the US Treasury, total outstanding debt has reached approximately $40.047 trillion. Of this amount, around $32.266 trillion is debt held by the public, while approximately $7.782 trillion represents intragovernmental debt.
The country’s debt burden has continued to rise amid increasing expenditure on social security programmes and growing interest payments. The record debt level has renewed discussions over the sustainability of US government finances and the long-term challenges facing the world’s largest economy.
