A Cameroon-flagged cargo ship named Lutuf has reportedly been hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia, according to local authorities. The vessel was carrying weapons, communication equipment and satellite equipment from Türkiye to a military training facility in Mogadishu. There were 10 crew members on board, including six Indians, while the remaining crew members were reportedly from Türkiye, Georgia and Serbia. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has not yet issued an official statement on the incident. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the hijacking.
According to preliminary reports, a small boat carrying two people first approached the cargo vessel. Shortly after the two individuals reportedly headed toward the shore, an airstrike took place in the area. Around the same time, eight armed pirates allegedly took control of the cargo ship. The two people aboard the small boat are believed to have been killed in the incident. However, it remains unclear who carried out the airstrike and whether the two deaths were connected to the hijacking. Authorities are investigating the incident and further details are awaited.
