Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was taken to a hospital under heavy security for medical examinations and treatment. Authorities said he was shifted from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, where doctors conducted tests related to high blood pressure, his heart and eyes, along with other necessary medical evaluations and treatment. He was taken back to jail after the examinations. Officials also said the possibility of sending him abroad for better treatment could be considered if required. Meanwhile, Imran Khan’s family has demanded that he be kept under the supervision of doctors at the hospital.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal said prisoners are generally provided medical treatment inside jails and are shifted to government hospitals when necessary. He said the government has approached the Supreme Court to seek clarity on whether a court order allowing Imran Khan to be shifted to a private hospital would also apply to other prisoners. Imran Khan, who has been serving a prison sentence for several years, was recently reported to have fallen seriously ill. The Supreme Court had earlier directed the government to shift him to a private hospital for better medical care.
