Janata Dal (United) leader and Bihar minister Shravan Kumar, who represents the Nalanda Assembly constituency, has made remarks on the sharp rise in sugar prices. He said the increase may not have a major impact on people, as sugar and sweets are already being consumed less due to the growing prevalence of diabetes. According to the minister, changing dietary habits and reduced sugar consumption could limit the impact of higher prices on consumers.
Sugar prices in India have risen significantly amid tight domestic supplies, lower production and increased demand ahead of the festive season. The government has also raised concerns over hoarding and speculative trading and has introduced stock limits to prevent excessive accumulation. In an effort to ease prices and improve domestic availability, the government has now permitted the duty-free import of one million tonnes of raw sugar.
