The Telangana Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has approved the implementation of prepaid smart electricity meters for all power connections in the state except agricultural services. The decision was taken as part of joining the Centre’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), aimed at strengthening the electricity distribution system and reducing transmission losses across the state.
Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy clarified that the Congress government is only implementing an agreement that was originally signed during the previous BRS regime between the Union Power Ministry, the Telangana government and power distribution companies. He assured that consumers would not bear any financial burden, as 60 percent of the project cost will be covered by the Central government and the remaining 40 percent by the State government. The minister also reiterated that agricultural power connections will not be brought under the smart meter system under any circumstances.
