The Telangana Government’s Cabinet Sub-Committee held its first meeting to examine the implications of the VBG Ramji Act-2025 on rural employment, state finances, and local governance. Chaired by Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, the committee discussed concerns regarding the proposed legislation and its potential impact on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), agriculture, and rural livelihoods. Members emphasized that protecting rural employment opportunities and safeguarding the rights of states should remain the primary objective.
The committee expressed concerns over provisions such as the proposed 60-day employment gap and the shifting of 40 percent of the financial burden to states without adequate consultation. Members also opposed the reported removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the rural employment scheme and discussed legal and constitutional options to challenge the legislation. The committee decided to coordinate with several opposition-ruled states, including Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, and Punjab, to formulate a joint strategy. It also resolved to continue consultations with legal experts and submit comprehensive recommendations to the state government in the coming days.
