The Supreme Court has heard a petition filed by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) seeking an extension of the nomination deadline for municipal elections in Andhra Pradesh. The party alleged that its candidates were prevented from filing nominations at 19 locations. The court declined to extend or postpone the nomination deadline across the board. However, it directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to examine the complaints already received from the affected locations and take appropriate decisions.
The Supreme Court asked the SEC to consider providing an opportunity to file nominations in places where complaints had already been lodged. It also said the option of submitting nominations before the respective district collectors could be examined, and directed the commission to decide the matter by Thursday. The deadline for announcing the final list of candidates has been extended until the 25th of this month. The SEC informed the court that complaints had been raised before the courts but not elsewhere. The Supreme Court directed the commission to submit a report on the action taken in compliance with its orders on the 27th of this month.
