SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is preparing for another major milestone in reusable rocket technology. In a planned test next month, the company aims to safely catch and recover its Starship vehicle using special mechanical arms installed on the launch tower. Musk has informally referred to these giant arms as “chopsticks.” The technology is designed to help SpaceX bring rockets and boosters back to the launch site after a mission instead of allowing them to fall into the ocean. SpaceX has already demonstrated this approach with its Super Heavy boosters, the first-stage rockets used to launch Starship, marking a significant step forward in rocket recovery technology.
For the upcoming test, SpaceX plans to attempt the recovery of the entire Starship vehicle using the tower-mounted arms. If successfully developed and implemented, the technology could significantly reduce the cost of space launches by allowing rockets to be reused more efficiently. Recovering both the Super Heavy booster and the Starship vehicle could also make frequent space missions more practical. Musk recently expressed confidence in the programme, saying that Starship could potentially support weekly space missions starting next year. He also indicated that SpaceX hopes to reach a launch rate of two missions per week by the end of next year. These goals depend on the success of upcoming tests and further development of the technology.
