Speed Thrills Turn Fatal: Sports Bike Accidents Raise Alarm in Srikakulam

The growing fascination for high-powered sports bikes among youngsters is raising serious road safety concerns in Srikakulam district. Two days ago, three youngsters travelling on a sports bike reportedly rammed into a stationary van on the Old Bridge in Srikakulam city, killing a 22-year-old from Relli Veedhi on the spot and leaving another seriously injured. In another accident around three months ago on GT Road, a youngster riding a friend’s sports bike reportedly lost control and hit a roadside pavement before crashing into an electric pole. The speedometer reportedly showed 110 kmph at the time of the accident. According to the information provided, young people account for nearly 30% of those killed in road accidents in the district every year.

Lack of driving experience, drunk driving, excessive speed while using mobile phones and roads unsuitable for high-performance motorcycles are being cited among the major reasons for such accidents. The increasing availability of expensive, high-CC motorcycles even in rural areas has added to the concern, while some parents are reportedly buying powerful bikes for youngsters without adequately monitoring their riding habits. Authorities have warned that exceeding prescribed speed limits is an offence and say efforts are being made to curb violations and prevent accidents. Greater parental supervision, responsible riding and strict adherence to traffic regulations are essential to reduce avoidable fatalities.
