Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has warned that the state could face a severe crisis due to the El Niño phenomenon, comparing the potential situation to the challenges experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking to the media after a meeting at Praja Bhavan attended by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, TPCC president Mahesh Goud, ministers, legislators and senior Congress leaders, he said extreme heat could continue for the next eight months. He urged people to use water and electricity judiciously, stating that reservoir levels were critically low and drinking water needs would have to take priority over agricultural requirements. The Chief Minister also called for reduced electricity consumption in government offices, limited use of air conditioners and greater promotion of solar power.
Revanth Reddy said the government had been preparing people for drought-related challenges and urged public representatives to visit villages after Sankranti and remain engaged with local communities until the end of May. He announced plans to monitor their activities through an app and said special funds would be allocated for soil-related works in villages and agricultural areas to generate employment. The Chief Minister also criticised the previous BRS government over its decisions concerning the Yadadri power plant and accused BRS leaders of spreading misinformation about the drought. He called on Congress leaders to communicate the situation clearly to the public and work to protect livelihoods, livestock and access to essential resources.
