Rajahmundry SP Narasimha Kishore has described the incident involving medical student Priyanka and her friend Umesh as a criminal act rather than an accidental road crash. According to the police, the two were returning on a scooter after watching a movie when two men, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, got into an argument with security personnel at a mall. While attempting to leave in their car, the accused allegedly hit the scooter and drove over the victims again before fleeing. CCTV cameras reportedly recorded the incident.
Police received information from the hospital on the same night and arrested the accused within hours based on Umesh’s statement and CCTV evidence. The case was registered under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code for attempted murder, following legal advice, and the accused were remanded after being produced before the court on the 6th. Police said call data analysis found no prior connection or enmity between the accused and the victims. The SP said they will seek police custody and are collecting documentary and driving-related evidence to strengthen the case and secure conviction.
