Public outrage is growing against several Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders in West Bengal over allegations of collecting "cut money" from people. Residents have been demanding that the money allegedly taken from them be returned. TMC leader Brahmananda Chakraborty, who is facing such allegations, reportedly hid beneath stacks of sarees in a shop in Howrah when police arrived to arrest him. He was eventually taken into custody.
In Mathabhanga Municipality, TMC councillor Kakali Ghosh has begun returning the money allegedly collected from residents. Locals also attacked the car of TMC MLA Madan Mitra with eggs, demanding repayment of their money. TMC leader Jay Prakash Majumdar and former minister Swaroop Das also faced similar protests. Meanwhile, Meera, wife of former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, praised Chief Minister Suvendu for his performance.
