Pakistan Imposes Tough Fuel-Saving Restrictions Amid Energy Crisis

Pakistan is dealing with mounting pressure on its economy amid fuel shortages, higher energy costs and fluctuations in international crude oil prices. In response, the government has introduced a set of fuel-conservation measures aimed at reducing nationwide consumption. Shopping malls and markets have been ordered to close by 9 pm, while wedding ceremonies and function halls must shut by 10 pm. Wedding events have also been restricted to serving a single dish. Hotels and restaurants are permitted to operate until 11 pm, with home delivery and takeaway services exempt from the timing restrictions.

The measures also extend to the government administration. Fuel quotas for official vehicles are being reduced by 50 per cent, while foreign trips and purchases of new government vehicles have been restricted for three months. Ministers and public representatives have been advised to conduct reviews through teleconferencing instead of physical meetings, while official dinners are to be avoided unless foreign delegations are visiting. Rising fuel costs are also affecting transport and essential goods, adding to the pressure on households and businesses. The government has announced a subsidy for two-wheelers and auto-rickshaw users, but the broader impact of the energy crisis remains a concern.
