India’s coal sector recorded significant growth in October, with production from captive and commercial mines reportedly rising by 42 per cent. Total coal production from these mines reached 22.03 million tonnes during the month. Coal dispatches also registered a 36 per cent increase compared with the corresponding period last year. With the addition of the Lohari mine in Jharkhand, a total of 87 captive and commercial mines are currently operational across the country.
The Ministry of Coal aims to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen domestic energy security by increasing coal production within the country. Efforts are being focused on expanding the operations of captive and commercial mines and improving production and supply capacity to meet the country’s energy requirements.
