Narapura Venkateswara Swamy Temple: History, Rituals and Pavitrotsavam Details!

The Sri Narapura Venkateswara Swamy Temple is located in Jammalamadugu on the banks of the Penna River in Andhra Pradesh. According to the temple’s traditional history, Vijayanagara ruler Vijaya Devaraya visited the region with his wife Narayanamma while planning to build a Vishnu temple. The area was reportedly named Narayanapuram after her, which later came to be known as Narapuram. Another local tradition states that a devotee named Narapurayya had a dream in which Lord Venkateswara instructed him to install His idol. The temple’s traditional account connects the shrine’s present name with this devotee.

The temple conducts daily rituals according to Agama traditions and celebrates annual Brahmotsavams during the Vaishakha month. The chariot procession is considered a notable feature, with people from different communities participating in the event. The shrine also attracts devotees on Saturdays and important occasions such as Vaikuntha Ekadashi and Vijayadashami. The temple was under the Endowments Department for several decades before becoming part of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams in 2008. The annual Pavitrotsavam is conducted to symbolically address ritual omissions or deficiencies that may have occurred during regular worship and to uphold the sanctity of the temple. This year, the three-day Pavitrotsavam is scheduled from September 21 to 23 under TTD supervision, with special prayers, homams, Swarna Pushparchana and sacred offerings.
