US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has made key remarks amid ongoing protests in New Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Rubio said he would not interfere in the internal affairs of another country, while noting that protests and political disagreements are common in democratic societies. He pointed out that demonstrations also take place regularly in the United States, adding that public protests reflect political debate and differences of opinion. Recently, a group of 20 United Nations human rights experts criticised the Indian government’s response to youth protests in Delhi, alleging excessive use of force and arbitrary detentions. The experts also called for an independent investigation into the government’s actions. Rubio’s comments came amid the international discussion surrounding these allegations.
Meanwhile, Rubio travelled to Jamnagar in Gujarat as part of his three-day visit to India. He is scheduled to visit the oil refinery operated by Reliance Industries. Rubio has previously praised India’s extensive refining capacity, describing the country as a major force in the global oil-refining sector. The visit comes as the United States explores new markets for Venezuelan crude oil. At the same time, ongoing conflicts in West Asia have disrupted shipping movements through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, raising concerns about global energy supplies. Against this backdrop, India’s large-scale oil-refining infrastructure could play an important role in addressing potential disruptions to international fuel supply chains.
