Economist Parakala Prabhakar, husband of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, is set to participate in a nationwide protest on October 23 against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Organised by the People Against SIR alliance, the protest will demand the scrapping of SIR, the restoration of deleted voters’ names and action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Prabhakar is expected to share the platform with actor Prakash Raj, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait and Cockroach Janata Party founder Abhijeet Dipke. The alliance has also invited INDIA bloc parties to join the demonstrations, but their participation has not been confirmed. Under the slogan “Har Haath Mein Tiranga, Har Gali Mein Jantar Mantar”, organisers have called for protests across the country, alleging that SIR could disenfranchise eligible voters. The Election Commission’s stated purpose of the revision is to update electoral rolls, while allegations of politically motivated deletions remain contested.
