The bike taxi issue has once again sparked controversy in Maharashtra. The Maharashtra Cyber Department has issued notices to Google and Apple, seeking the removal of apps such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido from their platforms. Authorities alleged that these companies are operating bike taxi services without proper legal approvals.
According to the Maharashtra Transport Department, the aggregators are not fully complying with state transport rules and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. The government also raised concerns over driver verification, insurance safety, women’s security measures, and emergency response systems. A recent incident involving the death of a woman reportedly linked to a bike taxi service has intensified the issue.
Several states, including Delhi, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, are already witnessing disputes over bike taxi operations. Some states have allowed only electric bike taxi services while restricting petrol powered private bikes. Analysts believe that if Maharashtra strictly blocks these services, it could influence policies in other states as well.
