Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa scripted history by becoming the first Indian player to win the prestigious Norway Chess 2026 title. Following the remarkable achievement, chess legend Magnus Carlsen showered praise on the young Indian star, describing him as an exceptional fighter. Carlsen noted that Praggnanandhaa’s victory was well-deserved, especially after winning four consecutive classical games in the tournament, a feat he called extraordinary.
Carlsen, who suffered defeats against Praggnanandhaa in both of their encounters during the event, said he was delighted to see the Indian prodigy receive success worthy of his immense talent. Reflecting on his triumph, Praggnanandhaa said the tournament began on a challenging note, but finishing as champion brought immense satisfaction. He added that defeating Carlsen and ultimately lifting the trophy in front of the Norwegian champion made the achievement even more special and memorable.
