Indian nationals account for more than half of the foreign prisoners held in Bangladesh’s jails, according to local media reports. At least 407 foreign nationals from 15 countries are reportedly serving sentences for offences including drug trafficking, human trafficking and gold smuggling. Of these, 238 are Indians. Among the Indian prisoners, 168 have already completed their sentences but remain in detention because arrangements for their repatriation have not yet been finalised. Other foreign prisoners reportedly include nationals of Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan and Malaysia.
An official from the High Commission of India said Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had shared lists of Indian prisoners who had completed their sentences. However, difficulties in verifying their nationality have delayed their release and repatriation. The Indian mission has requested permission from Bangladeshi authorities to meet and speak with the prisoners, the official said. The mission is awaiting a response from Bangladesh’s foreign ministry, while the process of confirming the prisoners’ nationality continues. Further steps towards their return to India will depend on the completion of the necessary verification procedures.
