The Varanasi Municipal Corporation has decided to shift meat, fish, and poultry shops outside the city limits as part of plans to make Varanasi a vegetarian city. Around 350 to 400 meat shops located within the city are expected to be relocated in phases over the next six months, with the process likely to be completed before Diwali.
The shops will be moved to areas such as Ramnagar, Sujabad, Ganeshpur, Avalesh Nagar, and Shivpur. If implemented, Varanasi could become the second vegetarian city in India after Palitana in Gujarat. Reports indicate that the city's population consists of about 72 percent Hindus and 27 percent Muslims.
