Jhandu Kumar’s journey from a financially struggling family in Harnaut, Nalanda district of Bihar, to winning a Commonwealth medal is a remarkable story of determination. Polio affected both his legs when he was just five, but he refused to allow his disability to define his ambitions. Initially competing in shot put and discus throw, Jhandu later joined a gym to improve his strength, where he discovered para powerlifting. At the same time, he carried the responsibility of supporting his family, travelling around 20 kilometres to bring vegetables for his father’s business and helping at the shop. When the vegetable business temporarily shut down, he borrowed money to buy an electric auto and drove it to support his family while continuing his training.
His sporting career, however, was not without setbacks. At the 2023 National Para Powerlifting Championships, Jhandu failed to complete a single lift and finished last. The setback proved to be a turning point after coach Rajinder Singh Rahelu recognised his potential and helped him train at the SAI centre in Gandhinagar. With improved technique, Jhandu went on to win silver at the Khelo India competition and later claimed gold with a national-record lift of 206kg. He has now taken another major step by lifting 190kg to secure bronze at the Commonwealth Games, earning international recognition and demonstrating how persistence can overcome formidable financial and physical challenges.
