Flood-Hit Nepal Faces Power Crisis.. India Approves 18-Hour Daily Electricity Export

Severe flooding has caused extensive damage to hydropower infrastructure in Nepal, triggering a significant power shortage in the neighbouring country. In response, the Government of India has taken a key step to support Nepal during the crisis. The Union Ministry of Power has officially approved the export of electricity to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for 18 hours a day, from midnight to 6 pm. The approval will remain in effect from September 13, 2026, until December 31, 2026.

India will supply up to 600 MW through the Muzaffarpur–Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur–Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line. The quantity of electricity to be supplied from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026. The Ministry of Power said the move will help meet Nepal’s electricity requirements during the crisis while further strengthening the long-standing diplomatic and energy cooperation between the two countries.
