China has taken a major step toward strengthening its technological future by making artificial intelligence (AI) education compulsory for primary and secondary school students nationwide. Under the new policy, children as young as six years old will receive at least 8 to 10 hours of AI instruction every academic year, beginning from the first grade. The initiative is designed to gradually build digital literacy and technological skills among students from an early age.
The curriculum has been tailored to different age groups. Primary school students will learn through interactive activities such as block programming, image-recognition robots, and AI-powered devices. Middle school students will explore real-world AI applications, data management, and generative AI tools, while high school students will study advanced topics including neural networks, machine learning algorithms, AI ethics, bias, and data privacy. By integrating AI into mainstream education, China aims to strengthen its position as a global leader in artificial intelligence by 2030.
