Chennai Secretariat Row: Fishermen Oppose Pattinapakkam Project

The proposed construction of a new Assembly-cum-Secretariat complex at Pattinapakkam in Chennai has triggered strong opposition from fishermen living in surrounding coastal settlements. Residents of Srinivasapuram, Mullikuppam, Mullimanagar, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Nambikkai Nagar, Bhavani Kuppam, Duming Kuppam, Irudhayarajapuram, Selvarajapuram, Nochchi Nagar and Nochikuppam have raised concerns over the project. Fishermen say the proposed site has longstanding links to their communities and fear that construction could affect access to the coast, fishing-related activities and their livelihoods. Representatives from several fishing villages have held consultations and demanded that the government withdraw the order related to the project.

Fishermen’s representatives have also alleged that the government did not adequately consult local communities before identifying the site. They say many families in the area already live in ageing or unsafe houses and have been seeking suitable land for rehabilitation. Community representatives further expressed concern that increased security around the Secretariat could restrict access to the coast and interfere with fishing activities. Support for the protests has reportedly come from fishing communities beyond the immediate area, while several political parties have also raised objections to the project. Fishermen have warned that they will intensify their agitation if their demands are not addressed.
