Sunmarg Private Limited, which publishes the popular Hindi daily 'Sunmarg', has acquired the entire stake of the media company 'Tehelka', which has been the center of sensation. Sunmarg Group announced in a statement that it has acquired 100 percent stake in Tehelka.com Private Limited. The company said that with this acquisition, it has entered the magazine and digital media segments.
Sunmarg Group said that it plans to invest more in Tehelka, which is currently published as a bi-weekly (weekly), and convert it into a weekly. It has clarified that the publication of the magazine will continue in print and digital formats. The company said that the acquisition process was completed in October this year.
Sunmarg acquired these shares from the group of investors who bought Tehelka in 2017. Those investors had earlier bought the shares of Tarun Tejpal and other minor investors and sent them out. The company has clearly stated that Tarun Tejpal, who resigned as editor in the wake of sexual harassment allegations, has no connection with the current organization or its activities.
Sunmarg announced that senior journalist Arvind Chaturvedi has been appointed as the new chief editor of Tehelka. The agreement states that the old litigations and other guarantees against Tehelka will be taken over by the old owner, Anant Media Private Limited. Tehelka's lifetime subscribers have been assured that they will continue to receive print and digital copies as usual. The Sunmarg Group said in its statement that its aim is to provide meaningful and serious journalism to the public while complying with government regulations. Based in Kolkata, Sunmarg is recognized as the largest Hindi media network in eastern India.
