Osmania University has intensified scrutiny of PhD theses amid growing concerns over the use of artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini in academic research. Faculty members are using advanced plagiarism detection software to identify whether research work has been independently conducted or heavily assisted by AI. Scholars whose theses show significant similarities or AI-generated content are being asked to revise and resubmit their work.
The university has been using the Turnitin software since July last year to examine doctoral submissions. Officials say the system can identify plagiarism levels and detect AI-assisted content within minutes. According to university sources, a significant number of theses reviewed over the past two years required corrections and modifications. Researchers have also been warned that academic misconduct could lead to severe consequences, including restrictions on future PhD admissions.
