Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu made key announcements in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly on reservations for Backward Classes. He said the state Cabinet had taken three major decisions aimed at promoting the social and political empowerment of BC communities. The government has decided to provide 34% reservation for BCs in rural local bodies and 33.33% reservation in urban local bodies. It has also decided to introduce direct elections for mayors and municipal chairpersons in urban local bodies.
Chandrababu said the government had also decided to establish 28 Zilla Praja Parishads across Andhra Pradesh. Criticising previous administrations for failing to protect BC reservations, he said the coalition government would stand firmly with backward communities. He described the 34% reservation as a step towards greater participation in decision-making and social justice. He also reiterated the government's commitment to providing reservations for BCs in nominated posts, as promised during the elections.
