The Reserve Bank of India has introduced revised guidelines for bulk fixed deposits, focusing on greater transparency and consistency in the way banks offer and disclose deposit interest rates. The revised rules will come into effect from October 1, 2026.
The new framework covers bulk fixed deposits above Rs.3 crore and applies to commercial banks, small finance banks, regional rural banks, payments banks, local area banks and urban cooperative banks. RBI clarified that the changes are aimed at improving transparency and do not direct banks to increase or reduce their deposit interest rates.
Banks will be required to publish their deposit interest-rate schedules on their websites in advance. For bulk deposits, the applicable rates must be published every working day by 10:00 am, with a grace period of up to 10:10 am.
The interest rates offered on deposits of the same size and on the same date should be uniform across the bank’s branches and customers, without discrimination in interest payments. However, banks will have flexibility to offer different rates on bulk deposits based on the differential run-off rates applicable under the Liquidity Coverage Ratio framework.
