

Indian Railways registered strong growth in both freight transportation and passenger services during June 2026, reinforcing its role as a key driver of India's economic growth. The Railways transported 142.21 million tonnes of freight, up 4% from 136.71 million tonnes in June 2025, generating nearly ₹430 crore in additional revenue. Significant growth was recorded in the transportation of fertilizers, iron ore, domestic coal, clinker, and other commodities, reflecting sustained demand across major sectors of the economy.
Passenger traffic also witnessed steady growth during the month. A total of 63.81 crore passengers travelled by train, compared to 62.37 crore in the corresponding month last year. Non-suburban passenger traffic increased by 3.9%, while suburban travel grew by 0.9%. Indian Railways also expanded premium services, with the number of Vande Bharat Express trains reaching 164. During the first quarter of FY 2026-27, freight loading touched 419.08 million tonnes, while coal supplies to thermal power plants increased by 7%, supporting uninterrupted electricity generation across the country.
