India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India, is set to introduce a new innovation in the automobile sector. On June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day, the company is expected to launch a car that runs entirely on E 100 ethanol fuel.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, recently announced that this will be India’s first E-100 flex fuel vehicle. The launch comes at a time when the government is actively promoting ethanol as an alternative fuel to reduce dependence on conventional petroleum products.
India already sells petrol blended with 20 percent ethanol, and the government is working towards increasing the blending ratio to 30 percent. According to Aditya Jayakar, Joint Managing Director of UCAL Limited, vehicles running entirely on ethanol could reduce fuel expenses by 25 to 35 percent compared to petrol, making them both economical and environmentally friendly.
