India continues to lead the world in makhana production, accounting for an estimated 80 to 85 per cent of global output. According to the 2025–26 figures cited in the report, India produced 80,590 metric tonnes of makhana, with Bihar alone contributing around 60,000 metric tonnes. This significant share highlights India’s position as a major producer and supplier of makhana in the global market.
North Bihar, particularly the Mithila, Seemanchal and Kosi river belt regions, is known for makhana cultivation. Darbhanga, Madhubani, Purnia, Katihar and Supaul are among the key districts associated with its production. These regions play an important role in supplying makhana to domestic and international markets, strengthening India’s presence in the global makhana trade.
