Indian stock markets extended their winning streak for the sixth consecutive session on Thursday, with benchmark indices registering sharp gains amid positive global cues. Developments surrounding the US midterm election results and a decline in crude oil prices boosted investor sentiment. At around 1:45 pm, the BSE Sensex was trading 2,024 points higher at 79,326, while the NSE Nifty gained 578 points to reach 24,538. Almost all sectoral indices were trading in positive territory, with the exception of pharmaceuticals. The Nifty Auto index advanced around 2.5%. InterGlobe Aviation, Shriram Finance, Asian Paints, Maruti Suzuki and Bajaj Finance were among the major gainers on the Nifty. Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Cipla, Coal India and Bharti Airtel were among the stocks trading with marginal losses.
Several factors contributed to the market rally. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones surged by more than 1,500 points following the US midterm election results, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq gained 1.58% and 1.44%, respectively. Expectations of easing tensions in West Asia pushed Brent crude prices down to around $93.50 a barrel, their lowest level in two months. The rupee also strengthened by 14 paise against the US dollar to trade at 94.32. Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors continued their buying spree for the fourth consecutive session, purchasing equities worth ₹7,284 crore on Wednesday. This was their highest single-day purchase since October 2025, according to the supplied market update.
