Indian equity benchmark indices closed in the red on Tuesday as investors resorted to profit booking after four consecutive sessions of gains. Market sentiment remained cautious ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy announcement scheduled for Wednesday. Selling pressure in FMCG, banking, and realty stocks weighed on the broader market, leading to a decline in the benchmark indices.
The BSE Sensex fell 210.08 points to settle at 78,428.95, while the NSE Nifty 50 declined 159.40 points to close at 24,614.90. Among Sensex constituents, Hindustan Unilever, NTPC, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, IndiGo, and Tech Mahindra were the major losers. On the other hand, Trent, Bajaj Finance, BEL, Tata Steel, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Bajaj Finserv ended with gains. Meanwhile, Brent crude traded at $85.58 per barrel, while gold was quoted at $4,047.14 per ounce in international markets.
